This American flag is flown to represent support for all of the brave soldiers who have been taken as prisoners of war, or are missing in action. The POW MIA flag is officially recognized by the United States government to show concern and commitment to these unaccounted for military personnel.

POW MIA Flag

The wife of a serviceman who was named missing in action, Mary Hoff, started the tradition for the POW MIA flag in 1971 during the Vietnam War. Newt Heisley designed the logo which is now black and white. The flag was originally designed to recognize and represent troops who were claimed MIA or POW.

This flag is to be flown on at government buildings and military installations, including Veterans Day, Independence Day, Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day, Flag Day and of course National POW/MIA Recognition Day. In mess, dining and chow halls the POW MIA flag is draped over a solitary table and chair as a symbol for the missing. The chair signifies a hope for their return.

Civilians may fly this flag at any time they would like. It is customary that the flag be no larger than an accompanying US flag, and should be flown below it. When flying from separate poles, this flag should be flown to the onlookers' left of the US flag.

There are black and orange versions, as well as red and black ones, but the black and white version is the flag officially flown by the United States of America.

For more than 200 years, the American flag has been the symbol of American Independence. When talking about flags, do you know and understand the different parts of a flag?

If you are not familiar with the parts of the flag yet, take a look at the diagram below:

Take a look at the Anatomy of a Flag

Hoist - this is used to describe the height of the flag when in flight. The edge of the flag that is attached to the flagpole or staff is also called the hoist of hoist end.

Fly - The width or length of an extended flag or the space from the end of the canton to the end of the flag.

Fly end -
This is what flaps at the end of the flag and this part sometimes frays.

Canton - This is the top inner corner of the flag.

Field -
The field can be found between the hoist and the fly ends. This is sometimes called the ground.

Flagpoles

Flagpole - This is something that supports the flag and is also known as the staff, flagstaff or mast.

Truck - This is the cap at the peak of the flagpole and it has hole so pulleys can be attached to raise or lower a flag.

Staff Ornament or Finial - decorative ornaments can be placed at the flag. See diagram above.

Halyard - The rope or cable is called the Halyard and it is used to raise or lower the flag.

It was a Baptist minister and Christian Socialist named Francis Bellamy who wrote the original Pledge of Allegiance on 1892. He wanted to express his ideas to Edward Bellamy who was the author to American socialist to the utopian novels entitled Looking Backward and Equality written in 1888 and 1897 respectively. Both of them discussed how the middle class can make equality in terms of political, social and economic aspect, thus there would be a planned economy.

It was September 8 when the Pledge was published on the leading family magazine – The Youth’s Companion. Daniel Ford, the owner and editor of the magazine hired Francis Bellamy in 1891 as his assistant then he later on founded the controversial Ford Hall Forum in downtown Boston.

The following year, Francis Bellamy became chairman of a committee of state superintendents of education and he was the one who organized the program of quadricentennial celebration for Columbus Day of public schools. From then on, the 'Pledge of Allegiance’ has been part of flag raising ceremonies and flag salute in public school programs.

The original pledge was:

'I pledge allegiance to my Flag and (to*) the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.'

The word ‘equality’ was not included because during that time, the state superintendents of education were not in favor of equality for women and African Americans.

Those words now read:

I pledge allegiance to the Flag
of the United States of America,
and to the Republic for which it stands:
one Nation under God, indivisible,
With Liberty and Justice for all.

The height of your flagpole actually determines the size of the flag so it’s important that the flag and the flag pole to be in proportion. Those angled poles and standing poles that are found in offices and indoor displays can have a 3x5 flag or 4x6 flag. For a house mounted pole, your flag should be one foot shorter than the length of the pole. This is to prevent any chance of dragging against the ground or garden below it. The larger the flags, the larger the poles you have to purchase.

This is the chart where you can see flag pole height and corresponding flag size:

Flagpole Height (ft.)       Flag Size (ft.)
20                                          4 x 6
25                                           5 x 8
40                                           6 x 10
50                                           8 x 12
60                                         10 x 15
70                                         12 x 18
90                                         15 x 25
125                                       20 x 30
200                                      30 x 40
250                                      40 x 50

There are also rules and regulations that you need to follow when it comes to flag pole positions in front of yards of homes. That is why it is advisable to check with your local community officials or even your neighbors so that you will not go against those rules. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

When you try to find the meaning of a flag it usually describes it as ‘a piece of rectangular cloth with distinctive color and design that is used for signaling or identification.’ However, it should be treated as something more than that. The flag represents the whole country so that when somebody sees it, the person would be able to easily distinguish what country that flag represents. As a standard rule, every country needs a flag – without it, the country will be incomplete.

There are a lot of different stories behind a country flag. The only problem is that some appear to be false and completely inaccurate. People even claim specific reasons behind the colors and designs that were put on national flags but they are outright misinformation and have totally no bearing on the current use of the flag. But even if the origin of each country flag is hard to tell, there are still symbols that give forth clear and obvious meanings.

However, it is not really a good idea to assign specific meanings to the flag if you are unsure of what it means because you could be wrong. It’s always good to confirm it by researching or reading further about the history of a certain country. Common designs of flags include stripes, crosses, patterns, bands or quarters.

The country flag is more than just a decorative flag or element. Keep in mind that it stands for the country or nation’s identity and reflect the patriotism of the people of a certain country. All the flags of the world should be treated with high respect and honor.

Rules for Displaying a Flag on a Boat:

There are certain rules that you have to follow in displaying an American flag on a boat. We have to respect the flag at all times that’s why we acknowledge the presence of a flag when we see it because proper decorum demonstrates your respect for the flag and the country it represents.

1. A registered boat of the USA can fly the US flag. The captain, crew and owner of the boat or ship doesn’t have to be an American.

2. The proper flag to fly from a US vessel is the national ensign of the United States. It is also known as "Old Glory" or the "Stars and Stripes." It’s the only US flag that is recognized in the international waters. The flag has 13 alternating red and white stripes with blue field and 50 stars in the upper left hand corner. Other rules can be found in the flag code.

If you are going to attach a flag on the hood of your car, follow these simple steps:

1. Consider buying a car flag with a suction cup attachment. There are custom made car flags available to suit your needs. Rates may vary. Make sure the spot where you want to place the suction cup is clean and dry so you won’t have a difficult time placing the cup there.

2. To check if the flag does not distract you, you can sit inside the driver seat and check. Try driving around the block to see if the flag will not come loose. If it does, you have o adjust quickly before you lose the flag while you’re on the road.

The 3x5 American Flag is the standard household size of the American flag.  This is best used by nationalists who wish to display the flag outdoors and this is also wonderful to put it indoors. Another fact of its historical significance is that this is also used by mounted units such as Combat of Arms, mobile artillery and Battalion Mounted Engineers.

This is a good quality printed flag that is is also suitable to be displayed outside the house because it will surely catch the attention of any patriot who passes by. This is also very colorful and would last a long time outdoors.

An interesting fact about the flag is only the President and Governors of the state are allowed give orders regarding flying the flag on half-staff or half-mast. When we say half-staff or half-mast, it means flying the flag nearly halfway up a flagpole or ship's mast. This is done to show respect, mourning or distress.
